Get to Know Bride Rose Sweeney
Name: Bride Rose Sweeney
Office you’re seeking: Ohio House of Representative, District 14
Are you an incumbent? No.
If no, do you currently hold an elected office? No.
Tell us a little bit about yourself (i.e. where are you from, where’d you go to school, what you do for a living, etc.)
I was born and raised on the same street on the West side of Cleveland, where my grandparents raised their family. I am a lifelong Cleveland native and graduate of John Carroll University, where I studied political science, business, and leadership. Coming from a family of public servants, I knew that in some way or another I wanted to also give back to my community. Therefore, following graduation from college, I applied and was selected to be a fellow for the Ohio Legislative Service Commission, the nonpartisan agency that drafts, researches, and writes states laws. After that, I worked for the Ohio Senate Democratic Caucus for a variety of different senators, including directly working for two minority leaders. This experience allowed me to gain the confidence and experience I needed to run for office.
Why are you running for this office?
I have always been drawn to State level politics because in many ways what happens on this level impacts our families and communities more directly than most people realize. Also, our state legislature is severely lacking diversity and individuals from younger generations. Our generation has had a vastly different experience with the economy, education systems, and the job market. It is essential that the legislature has voices who understand the unique challenges of our times. The more the legislature reflects the reality of our constituencies, the better off we all are.
What are the most important issues on your campaign?
- Protecting Medicaid expansion
- Restoring the Local Government Fund
- Affordable Higher Education
Give us a fun fact about yourself.
The most common question I get asked is about my name- no it has nothing to do with marriage, and yes I have heard all the puns. I was named after my grandmother whose mother was from Ireland. Every generation since has had a “Bride Sweeney” and I was lucky enough to carry on our family name. (There was actually a St. Bride of Ireland, who’s miracle was turning water into beer).
What’s your favorite thing about Ohio?
Which team is your favorite sports team? If there’s a fun reason why, tell us!
Every Cleveland sports team (it is not always easy but always worth it).
If you were a professional athlete what song would you choose to be your “walk out” song?
“Cleveland Rocks” -Ian Hunter (The Drew Carey show theme song).
What TV show have you binge watched entirely too fast?
If you were an Olympic athlete, what sport would you compete in?
Track- 400-meter hurdles. I ran in high school and briefly in college.
Most importantly, how can young Dems help in your campaign?
They can sign up to help volunteer with the coordinated campaign and help all Democrats on the ticket. So knock doors in your community, whether it's a safe seat or a heavily controlled Republican area- every door counts! Although I don’t have a Republican opponent in my race, it is still critical for me to make sure that my district gets out to vote- we need to be focused everywhere!
