Name: Kelsey Swindler
Office you’re seeking: Wilmington City Council, at-large
Are you an incumbent? Yes
Tell us a little bit about yourself (i.e. where are you from, where’d you go to school, what you do for a living, etc.)
I am a native of Wilmington, Ohio. My family owns Swindler and Sons Florists, a florist and greenhouse that has operated in Wilmington for nearly 100 years. I worked in the family business while attending Wilmington City Schools, and graduated in 2008 from Wilmington High School. I studied English at Wittenberg University, graduating with a BA in 2012. I then returned to Wilmington and started a career in marketing and communications, now working in the healthcare industry. I serve on boards for HealthFirst and the Clinton County Trails Coalition, and am a member of the Democratic Central Committee in Clinton County.
Why are you running for this office? I love Wilmington.
I'm proud of the work we've accomplished in the last four years - in pulling Wilmington back from the brink of a financial crisis all too familiar to Ohio's small cities, passing fiscally responsible budgets heavily focused on repairing our aging infrastructure, and putting renewed focus on economic development, we've created a blueprint for Wilmington's revitalization. I’m excited to build on this momentum and continue working alongside community members on a shared vision for investment and growth.
What are the most important issues on your campaign?
When I ran in 2015, I promised we would invest in Wilmington’s future. And that’s exactly what we’ve done. It’s no accident that as we’ve invested, our local businesses have invested, and we’ve seen incredible economic growth and new jobs over the last several years. We have more work to do though, to continue building on these opportunities, but also to ensure that Wilmington remains a place where people want to live and spend their time. We have built and protected some incredible public spaces, but do people feel safe in them? That’s where we need to focus our energy now - in ensuring that the infrastructure investments and economic growth are being felt by community members and that we’re truly building the community they want and deserve.
Give us a fun fact about yourself. I studied abroad in Germany while I was in college, and love travelling internationally. My husband and I have a bucket list of countries we still want to see - and now, we can’t wait to take our son with us!
What’s your favorite thing about Ohio?
It sounds silly, but I love that Ohioans hold doors open for others. It’s such a small gesture, but it’s ubiquitous.
Which team is your favorite sports team? If there’s a fun reason why, tell us!
I’m a huge fan of LeBron James, so I love following the Los Angeles Lakers (and prior to the Lakers, the Cleveland Cavaliers). I’m so inspired by everything he’s done throughout his career to benefit his home community of Akron.
If you were a professional athlete what song would you choose to be your “walk out” song?
What TV show have you binge watched entirely too fast?
The Office - my husband and I never stop rewatching it!
If you were an Olympic athlete, what sport would you compete in?
Most importantly, how can young Dems help in your campaign?
October is peak canvassing season and every volunteer who can assist in knocking doors and talking to voters is a huge help!
