Get to Know Meg Ryan Shockey
Tell us a little bit about yourself (i.e. where are you from, where’d you go to school, what you do for a living, etc.).
I’m born and raised in Greater Cleveland and while Cleveland will always be considered home, I also love to travel and explore new places. While completing my undergraduate degree at BGSU, I worked for one summer in Washington, D.C. and studied abroad for a semester (6 months) in The Netherlands. Since graduating from BGSU, I’ve worked as an Executive Assistant at the Cleveland Teachers Union and started/graduated my Masters in Urban Planning, Development, & Design at Cleveland State University. I live at home with my husband (Michael) and our dog, Thor.
Why are you running for this office?
Brooklyn is a wonderful community to live in but is often overshadowed by the outer, wealthier suburbs of Cleveland. I want to make a difference in my community while helping to showcase how wonderful of a community it really is!
What are the most important issues on your campaign?
Working to combat the lies and misconceptions that spread around our city (especially thanks to social media).
Give us a fun fact about yourself.
I was raised in a politically active family, with my dad being a union leader in Cleveland and known in politics around Ohio. I’ve always told him he’ll one day be known as Meg Ryan’s dad instead of the other way around…..it’s finally happened on more than one occasion! If you run into John Ryan…be sure to say “You’re Meg Ryan’s dad!”
What’s your favorite thing about Ohio?
Experiencing all seasons. Affordable!
Which team is your favorite sports team? If there’s a fun reason why, tell us!
Columbus Blue Jackets – My husband and I have gone to the home opener for 8 years in a row! But I’m also a typical Cleveland sports fan – Indians, Browns, Cavs, Monsters, & Stipe Miocic!
If you were a professional athlete what song would you choose to be your “walk out” song?
What TV show have you binge watched entirely too fast?
Too many….but my favorite to watch after council meetings while eating dinner with my husband is Parks And Rec 😉
If you were an Olympic athlete, what sport would you compete in?
Most importantly, how can young Dems help in your campaign?
Do you know anyone living in Brooklyn? Give them a call or a message and let them know about me! Live in Greater Cleveland? Volunteer your time (canvassing is best, but literature drops, stuffing mail, etc. works too!)

Side note: We'll be blunt - campaigns cost money. Even if you're not on the ballot, the people running this November are going to have direct impact on your lives, so we're doing everything we can to make sure this impact starts with Young Dems. Can you chip in $5 to help us fund our campaign?
