Get to Know Carla Baldwin
Get to Know 2017 Endorsed Candidate ... Carla Baldwin
Why are you running?
I am running because I want to ensure equal administration of justice for everyone who will enter my courtroom. I want to educate the public on the Court system so that they understand their rights as well as the roll and responsibilities of Court personnel. Lastly I want to make sure that my Court is effective and not simply efficient. This will be accomplished by asking why an individual stands before the Court and caring enough to listen to the answer. That answer will then be used to craft effective sentencing orders. If the Court is successful in its efforts then we will start to see changed behavior.
What are the most important issues on your campaign?
Mental health illness and drug addiction plagues our community and its immediate effects are seen on a daily basis in municipal courts across this country. Youngstown is no exception. I want to increase the accessibility to mental health and drug treatment services for our clientele so they can receive desperately needed help earlier in the criminal justice process. I would also like to create a Specialized Docket to provide a treatment alternative to those who struggle with dual diagnoses. I have every intention of maintaining the Veterans Treatment Court and will look on ways to better the program for the benefit of those who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom.
Give us a fun fact about yourself.
My political crush is Sen. Cory Booker.
Who is your favorite president? Why?
That’s an easy one. It is none other than President Barack Obama. He led with a sound mind and a pure heart. His administration was marked with progressive change and made a nation believe in the audacity of hope. His historic two term presidency made this girl from the southside of Youngstown believe that my dream of becoming a judge that I have had since the age of 12 could come true and that I too could make history by becoming the first black female judge in Mahoning County.
What’s your favorite food on the campaign trail? Why?
You get to eat on the campaign trail, lol. Dry ranch wings and hot pepper cheese balls are a winning combo for me on the trail.
If you could be a superhero, who would you be? Why?
I would choose Superman because he can fly. My nieces and nephews live an hour away and they have my whole heart. If I could fly I would be able to see them every day. Also, it would save a lot on gas while on the campaign trail
If you were a professional athlete what song would you choose to be your “walk out” song?
“ROAR” by Katy Perry
What was your first paid job?
My first paid job was at McDonald’s. I worked the cash register, drive thru and kitchen.
How can young dems help in your race?
Young Dems can make phone calls, knock on doors, make candy bags for bingo, walk in a parade, distribute yard signs, promote my campaign on social media and come out and support at candidate forums.
