Get to Know James 'Jimmy' Calhoun
Name: James M. Calhoun
Office you’re seeking: 41st State House District
Why are you running? I decided to run because I was tired of seeing the middle class be destroyed by the current administration. They are slowly deteriorating worker’s rights, women’s rights, voting rights and the public school system. Growing up receiving government assistance, I have seen first-hand how a little support can open up a lot of doors and help change the vicious cycle of poverty.
What are the most important issues on your campaign? Education! I have a three year old daughter and the current condition of Ohio’s education system is deplorable.
Give us a fun fact about yourself. I played football at Miami University here in Ohio. In 2005, I scored a touchdown against Ohio State. Though we lost the game, having a 100k people boo you is a pretty great feeling!
Who is your favorite president? Why? John F. Kennedy. I always use his quote “Ask not what your Country can do for you. Ask what you can do for you Country.” JFK challenged Americans to serve their nation however they could. He literally challenged us to aim for the moon. How can he not be your favorite president?
What’s your favorite food on the campaign trail? Why? Caffeine. I know it’s not food but I’ve never relied on it this much in my life.
If you could be a superhero, who would you be? Why? Batman. He’s someone making sure that corruption and greed would not rule a city. He also fought hard for the average person. Also … he’s Batman.
If you were a professional athlete what song would you choose to be your “walk out” song? "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix
What was your first paid job? My first paid job was at Lee’s famous recipe in Middletown Ohio. Was one of the best jobs ever because we got free food whenever we worked there!
How can young dems help in your race? By supporting me! It’s a huge confidence booster to know that a statewide organization has your back! The amount of support that I have coming in is great but we can always use more volunteers in order to get our message out. Whether that be via canvasing, phone calls or even online support.
OYD will be canvassing for Jimmy on Saturday, September 17th at 10am. Want to join? Get the details and RSVP here.
